A night guard is a thin shell made based on and for your own teeth. It will not stop your grinding. It stops the grinding from reaching your enamel.

The guard sits between your upper and lower teeth overnight, so the two surfaces don’t meet under pressure. Dentists call it an occlusal splint. Two groups need one. Grinders who slide the jaw side to side, which is the noisy version. Clenchers who hold a silent squeeze and often have no idea they do it.
As a result of untreated bruxism, enamel thins and does not grow back, cusps flatten, edges chip, and older crowns and fillings crack early. Your jaw muscles spend the night working instead of resting, so you wake up with a headache.
A properly fitted guard

Rinse it in cool water when you take it out, then brush with a soft brush and mild soap. Toothpaste is abrasive and will scratch the surface.
Let it fully dry before closing the case. A damp guard in a sealed container picks up odour.
Avoid hot water, dishwasher, and even your car’s dashboard in hot months. Acrylic warps below boiling, and a warped guard no longer fits.
Bring it to your checkups. Thin spots tell us your grinding has picked up.

A night guard is a simple appliance that fails in small ways. If it’s too thick, you stop wearing it. If it’s uneven, you wake up sorer than before. At Woodbridge Smile Centre, we:
Look for the cause first. Different causes drive grinding, and the exact cause changes the final product.
Build the guard from your own model. No boil-and-bite trays are found here.
Include the adjustment. We adjust and fine-tune the fit after you have slept in it.
Offer direct billing. Night guards are covered by many Ontario plans and we submit them directly for you.
Mouth guard is the umbrella term for any appliance that covers the teeth. For example, a night guard handles grinding and a sports guard handles impact.
Clinically it is called bruxism, which refers to repeated clenching or sliding of the jaw outside of chewing. Awake bruxism is usually a stress habit you can catch yourself doing. Sleep bruxism is involuntary and harder on the teeth.
Bulky for the first week or two is normal, but pain in one specific tooth, your bite feeling off in the morning, or a guard that keeps loosening is not, so call usو and we will adjust it.
From one year to five, depending on how hard you grind. Watch the guard; if you see thin patches or cracks, or if it has a loose fit, it means it is due. We check yours at every recall.
A sports guard is a thicker appliance that absorbs a blow and spreads the force away from the front teeth. Custom versions are made from a model of your mouth, so they stay put and let you breathe, which is the usual complaint about the stock ones from a sporting goods store.
